Motivation

In a recent survey, more than half of younger British office workers said they plan, by the age of 45, to shift into a second career that offers fulfilment and the chance to make a difference, according to a new survey.

The poll, for insurance company Norwich Union, found 66 per cent of 1,218 employees in their 30s and early 40s described themselves as "unfulfilled," "drifting" or "miserable" in their jobs. And 52 per cent said they would happily earn less money in a role that made them feel better about themselves. Animal welfare worker, counsellor and yoga teacher were the top career pursuits cited.

  • So how can you ensure people who work with you are happy and fulfilled?
  • And what if you are one of the 66%?

There are several variables about work that can de-motivate people (what Frederick Herzberg called ‘Hygiene factors’). For example, the actual conditions at work, say if it were very hot, or cold. However, just installing air conditioning does not make people motivated. For that you have to look to deeper.

It’s complex, and subtly different for everyone, but chances are you can learn more with some observations and good questions.

Many people will cite money, but it’s what that money gives them that is important to them – it might be security, status, a sense of achievement, or something else.

These and other motivating factors like recognition, responsibility, a worthwhile job, a chance to learn and ‘grow’ must to be present, to give people an opportunity to be truly motivated.

  • How well does this describe your work?
  • What can you do to get yourself and others motivated?

‘People become really quite remarkable when they start thinking that they can do things. When they believe in themselves they have the first secret of success.’
